Meet our Occupational Therapist: Ally Scholtes

Ally Scholtes

Occupational Therapist

What inspired you to pursue your career?
When I was in Year 10 I spent time school work experience at the Burwood Spinal Unit in ChCh NZ. Spending time with the allied health team at this unit, I was struck by the incredible camaraderie, dedication, and hope that filled the space. Seeing the way occupational therapists empowered patients to reclaim independence and adapt to new challenges inspired me to pursue a career where I could make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

What do you love most about your role?
I love my job because it allows me to meet clients at a pivotal point in their lives, build meaningful relationships, and make a real impact—whether through life-changing home modifications and power wheelchair handovers or the ‘small’ wins, like helping a client with limited hand function find a way to hold a cup independently again.

What is your favourite piece of therapy equipment at GNC, and why?
I have lots of favourite pieces of equipment (our XSensor pressure mapping system is right up there), but my absolute favourite is using my ‘sense of self’ as a therapeutic tool. The ability to build trust, connect with clients on a human level, and adapt my communication and approach to meet their unique needs is one of the most powerful tools I have. It’s through these genuine connections that real progress happens—whether it’s fostering confidence, encouraging engagement in therapy, or helping someone navigate life’s challenges with dignity and independence.

What is a memorable moment from your time at GNC?
One of the most rewarding parts of my role at GNC is mentoring early-career OTs and watching them grow in confidence and skill. I love seeing them develop their clinical reasoning, build strong connections with clients, and really find their passion in this field. There’s nothing better than sharing in every client win—big or small—and celebrating those ‘lightbulb moments’ together. It’s a privilege to support them as they navigate the challenges and rewards of this work.

If you could instantly master any new skill, what would it be?
If I could master any new skill, it would definitely be water skiing. After a weekend of trying (and failing!), my kids are having a blast trolling me. I can’t let them have the upper hand, so I’m determined to show them some serious skills next time and finally impress them on the water!
